I have been manufacturing pipes for over forty years and the enjoyment of this craft has never ceased.  Each pipe manufactured is as individual as your thumb print, each piece of briar tells it's own story in the way of graining character.  The beauty of a smooth pipe, with it's birds eye grain, flame and straight grain, not to say my favourite is the sandblasted pipe, where you can really get great enjoyment from watching the soft grain being removed by the sand as it's blasted away. The picture emerging from the graining structure i.e. ring grain, nobly effect, the deep sandblasting, the highlights and the peaks of the grain still never cease to amaze me as the pipe forms it's own pattern.  The oil curing of the bowls is something I have perfected over the last twenty years, which was much of a hit and miss to start with, but has now been perfected with the mixing of three oils, this has resulted in making the 'Ashton' pipe one of the best smoking pipes in the world.

To bring the 'Ashton' pipe into balance, I take great care in manufacturing the hand cut mouthpiece, with materials such as: Ashtonite, Vulcanite & Brindle. Ashtonite is specially formulated for me and will never tarnish and is resistant to lip acid.  I am sure every pipe smoker knows the properties of Vulcanite & Brindle.  These materials being in solid form allows me to bring the pipe into perfect proportions.

I am always experimenting with new finishes and in fact have a new finish coming out very shortly called 'Gilt Edge', which I will elaborate on more when this becomes available.
